About Us
Members of the local and national physician, nurse practitioner, pharmacy, and nursing community serve as AKH Inc.’s healthcare programming advisory board.
The Advisory Board reviews the overall CME/CPE/CNE/CNPE/CPsyE program, assist sAKH with conflict resolution, and reviews select summary evaluations of past programs.

Joseph Arulandu MD is Board Certified in Internal Medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine and is also Board Certified in Clinical Lipidology. Dr Arulandu has been recognized by the NCQA/ADA as a Provider of Diabetic Excellence. He has served on many advisory boards, written numerous articles, and is in full time private practice dealing exclusively with high risk cardiovascular patients. Dr Arulandu is also a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine.

Michele Bednarzyk, DNP, ARNP is an Instructor at the University of North Florida. She has been at UNF for the past 14 years teaching in both the undergraduate an graduate Primary Care Nurse Practitioner program. She is the clinical coordinator for the nurse practitioner program. Dr.. Bednarzyk received her master’s degree in community health nursing and family nurse practitioner in 1991 from the University of South Carolina, and her Doctorate in Nursing Practice from the University of North Florida in 2009. She holds her certification as a family nurse practitioner from American Nurses Credentialing Center. Dr. Bednarzyk has worked in family medicine, pediatrics as well as OB/GYN as a family nurse practitioner. She currently maintains her practice with the Volunteers in Medicine clinic in Jacksonville. |

| David O’Dell, DNP, ARNP contributes his expertise as an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner to the coordination of nursing continuing education. He has education experience teaching at local universities in RN, RN to BSN, Masters and Doctorate programs. Clinical experiences include critical care, emergency nursing, home health and catastrophic case management. He is currently working in a neurology specialty with a focus in neurocognitive disorders. Dr. O’Dell holds Bachelor and Master of Science in Nursing degrees from the University of North Florida and a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis. He is a Board Certified Family Nurse Practitioner. | |

John Zapp MD is an anesthesiologist in Orange Park, FL. He has been with the Orange Park Medical Center for more than 11 years, serving on multiple committees including Pain Management, Oversight Committee, Code Blue Committee, Pharmacy Committee, Hospital QI Committee, and the Board of Directors. He has extensive experience for the U.S. Army Medical Corps, as Staff Anesthesiologist at Reynolds Army Community Hospital, Chief of Anesthesia and Operative Services at Reynolds Army Community Hospital and the 47th Army Field Hospital. He has been awarded the U.S. Army Commendation Medal: Service in support of the United Nations Mission in Haiti, Development and execution of the Reynolds Army Community Hospital JCAHO Program, and Labor Intrathecal Analgesia Award

Jennifer Haythornthwaite, Ph.D.
Jennifer Haythornthwaite, PhD, received her Doctorate in Psychology from the State University of New York at Stony Brook and completed a clinical internship at the West Haven VA Medical Center. After completing a fellowship at the National Institute on Aging, she joined the faculty at Johns Hopkins University in the School of Medicine and is currently a Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, the Director of the Behavioral Medicine Clinic, and the Director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Mind-Body Research. She has received a number of grants from the federal government and private foundations for her research on psychosocial adaptation to chronic illness, particularly her work on chronic pain. She is an international expert on the psychosocial aspects of pain, particularly the impact of negative emotions and pain coping strategies on pain and pain-related disability.

Lori Ley, RNC, MSN is a hospital-based clinical specialist in Women’s Health. She holds a Master of Science degree in Nursing with a cognate in education. She has an extensive clinical, educational, and leadership background in all aspects of women’s health, obstetrics, neonatal, and pediatric nursing, and holds professional certifications for Inpatient, Obstetrics and Electronic Fetal Monitoring. Utilizing all modes and methods of learning, her continuing education and curriculum design experience spans from a vast array of facility continuing education programs as a clinical nurse specialist to formal university curriculum development as adjunct faculty. She also has a diverse repertoire of instructor certifications that include neonatal, adult basic and advanced life support. In addition, Ms. Ley is an AWHONN Fetal Heart Monitoring Principles and Practices Instructor Trainer. She is a member of the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetrics, and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) and Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society. Ms. Ley also sits on the North Florida March of Dimes, Program Services Committee |

Virginia McCarty, RN, CIC, LHRM is an independent consultant in infection control and risk management. She is a diploma graduate nurse with certification in infection control and healthcare risk management. A member of the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC) and Florida Risk Managers Association, Ms. McCarty has extensive background in teaching healthcare professionals the principles of infection control, OSHA bloodborne pathogens, hazardous waste management, risk management and documentation.
